IPL 2025 Suspended for One Week Amid Escalating India-Pakistan Tensions
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has been suspended with immediate effect for one week due to rising cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Friday.
In a statement, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the decision, emphasizing that the suspension was taken in the broader interest of players, staff, sponsors, broadcasters, and fans. “Further updates on the revised schedule and venues will be shared after thorough discussions with relevant authorities and stakeholders,” the statement said.
The IPL Governing Council arrived at the decision following extensive consultations with franchise representatives, who expressed concerns over the prevailing situation. Saikia added that, while the BCCI fully trusts the country’s defense capabilities, it was deemed wise to prioritize collective safety.
The suspension was formalized after senior BCCI officials, including Saikia and IPL chairman Arun Dhumal, held an emergency meeting. Franchises were notified ahead of the public announcement, and teams have already begun disbanding, with players and staff securing immediate travel out of and within India.
This move follows the abandonment of Thursday’s match between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) in Dharamsala, which was halted midway due to security concerns. With regional airports closed, players and staff from both teams had to travel by bus to Jalandhar and then continue by train to Delhi.
The 2025 season has so far completed 58 matches, including the Dharamsala game. With 12 league matches and the playoffs remaining, the future schedule remains uncertain. If play cannot resume promptly, the next possible window could be September, as India’s upcoming five-Test series in England begins June 20, and the Asia Cup is also set for later in the year.
