On May 5, Barishal University students staged a large protest on campus demanding the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Shuchita Sharmin.
The protest began with a sit-in and rally in front of the administrative building, followed by a procession through the campus in the afternoon. Student leaders, including Wahidur Rahman and Mainul Islam from the Law Department and Shahedul Zaman from the Computer Science and Engineering Department, addressed the crowd.
The students claimed that despite previously presenting a 22-point set of demands, the vice-chancellor failed to deliver on any promises. They further accused her of trying to suppress the student movement by filing legal cases against protestors and creating what they described as a “fascist” atmosphere on campus, even pressuring students to sign undertakings under duress.
In response, the students announced that their sole demand now is the removal of Vice-Chancellor Sharmin. Protestors vowed to continue their demonstrations until she resigns.
