Amir Hossain Talukdar returns home after being discovered in a mentally unwell state in Penang forest
A Bangladeshi expatriate, Amir Hossain Talukdar, has returned home after being missing for 27 years, following his discovery in a remote jungle area in Penang, Malaysia.
The 62-year-old man from Naria upazila in Shariatpur was brought back to Bangladesh early Wednesday after arriving at Dhaka airport on a Batik Air flight. He was received by family members and officials from the BRAC Migration Programme with assistance from airport security and expatriate welfare authorities.
According to BRAC, Amir Hossain had travelled to Malaysia in 1996 for work and initially maintained regular contact with his family, even sending financial support. However, after a few years, communication suddenly stopped, and he was presumed dead by his relatives over time.
Recent reports indicate that a group of Bangladeshi expatriates living in Malaysia found him living in a small tin shelter inside a forested area in Penang while he was in a mentally unstable condition. They rescued him and shared his photos and videos on social media, which eventually led to his identification.
The viral posts were shared by expatriate community members and journalists, helping trace his family in Bangladesh. Following verification, the Bangladesh High Commission in Malaysia arranged a travel pass for his return.
Officials confirmed that Amir Hossain’s reunion with his family created a highly emotional atmosphere, particularly for his son, who had grown up believing his father was lost forever.
BRAC representatives stated that the organisation will assist in ensuring medical and psychological support for Amir Hossain considering his current condition.
Migration experts have described the case as a reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by migrant workers abroad and stressed the need for improved tracking systems and support mechanisms for expatriates.
Locals noted that the reunion has brought closure to years of uncertainty for the family, while also highlighting the emotional impact of long-term separation caused by migration and communication breakdowns.
The family has expressed gratitude for being reunited and said they hope to spend the remaining years together in peace after decades of separation and longing.
