Who Cheats More in Relationships - Men or Women?

The Chronify

Cheating in relationships is a common issue that repeatedly raises the question: who cheats more-men or women? James Joseph Sexton, a seasoned divorce and family law attorney from New York, has stated that the debate of “men vs. women” has been completely overturned.

James Joseph Sexton’s experience shows that men cheat more often, but women cheat far more skillfully.

In his words, women do bigger things, while men often get caught because of foolish mistakes.

He explains that not all cheating is the same. Based on his experience, cheating can broadly be divided into two types:

  1. Dalliance (a temporary fling) – a careless mistake or momentary lapse.

  2. Affair (extramarital relationship) – a fully planned, deep, long-term relationship.

Women generally lean more toward the second type, whereas men’s mistakes are often impulsive and careless.

Sexton adds, “Men and women not only cheat differently, they also react differently when cheated on.”

When a man finds out his wife cheated, his first question is often, “Did you sleep with him?”
 Men primarily fear physical intimacy.

When a woman finds out her husband cheated, her first question is, “Do you love her?”
 Women primarily fear emotional attachment.

According to Sexton, “These two reactions reveal deep social and psychological patterns. Men’s concern is about ‘possession’ or ‘control.’ Women’s concern is about ‘changed feelings.’”

His conclusion is quite clear: men get caught more often.
In his words, “Men get caught because of foolishness. Women can hide things intelligently.”
From his experience, both men and women cheat - but intelligence, emotions, methods, and the ability to hide things differ dramatically between them.

Stories of marital infidelity are as complex as their explanations. Sexton’s observations suggest that although both men and women cheat, their motives, behaviors, and emotional pathways are entirely different. And when a relationship is on the verge of breaking, the truth that emerges reveals how much harsh reality lies behind silence.
