Be aware of breast cancer
The Chronify
October is observed as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During this time, we honor the countless women who are battling the disease or have lost their fight against it. Yet breast cancer is one of the few types of cancer that can be completely cured if detected early and treated properly.
Global Reality
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide. In 2022, approximately 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer globally, and around 670,000 lost their lives to the disease. In developed countries, the 5-year survival rate for breast cancer exceeds 90%. In contrast, this rate is much lower in developing countries due to unequal healthcare access, late detection, and limited availability of treatment.
Situation in Bangladesh
Every year, about 13,000 women in Bangladesh are diagnosed with breast cancer, and nearly 6,000 die from it. Breast cancer is often detected late or in advanced stages, mainly due to lack of regular screening and low awareness. Additionally, the limited number of cancer treatment centers, shortage of specialized doctors, and high treatment costs prevent many patients from receiving timely and adequate care.
Symptoms of Breast Cancer
Any unusual changes in the breast should be taken seriously. Key symptoms include:
-
A hard lump in the breast or armpit
-
Sudden changes in size or shape of the breast
-
Abnormal discharge from the nipple, either bloody or clear fluid
-
Dimpling or thickening of breast skin
-
Nipple inversion or persistent pain
If any of these symptoms are noticed, consult a doctor immediately.
Why Screening is Important
Regular screening can detect breast cancer at an early stage, greatly increasing the chances of successful treatment. Women over 40 years old should undergo regular mammograms. Those with a family history of breast cancer need to be extra vigilant. Monthly self-examination is also highly effective. Bangladesh currently has access to modern breast cancer treatments.
Be Aware
Women over 40 who have never had a breast cancer screening should take the opportunity this month to get screened as part of awareness initiatives. Talk openly about breast cancer, break superstitions, and create an environment of awareness for women at home and in the workplace. Women in rural or marginalized communities often reach hospitals late due to lack of awareness, which reduces the success rate of treatment.
