Can water be drunk from an empty alcohol bottle?
The Chronify
Currently, in various parts of the country, there is a growing trend of selling or drinking water from empty alcohol bottles. This practice is especially increasing among people on the streets, at tea stalls, and among bus and truck drivers. The question arises is it safe to drink water from empty alcohol bottles?
According to experts, this habit can be risky for health. No matter how well an empty alcohol bottle is washed, some alcohol residue may remain. Consuming it can be harmful, especially for children and those allergic to alcohol.
Dr. Rafsan Mahmud, a physician in the Department of Medicine at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, stated, “Alcohol bottles are generally made for storing alcohol, not water. If the bottle is not properly cleaned, it can lead to bacterial contamination, toxicity, and even increase the risk of cancer.”
From a social perspective, the practice is also controversial. Drinking water from an alcohol bottle may be viewed negatively by others, potentially causing socially embarrassing situations.
Government food and health authorities have also advised caution regarding this matter. They recommend using containers specifically designed for storing food and beverages, which is the safest and most hygienic option.
It is better to avoid the habit of drinking water from empty alcohol bottles. Considering both health and social aspects, it is risky and inappropriate. For safe drinking water, always use clean, designated water bottles or containers.
