Does onion oil really help hair grow?
The Chronify
The benefits of onions aren’t limited to food they’re also a great natural remedy for hair. Onion oil works effectively to strengthen hair roots, promote new hair growth, and enhance overall hair health. It contains a high amount of sulfur, which helps strengthen hair structure and prevents breakage, split ends, and thinning.
Beauty expert Sharmin Kochi explained how to prepare and use onion oil to get the best results.
How much natural oil to use
It’s best to mix onion juice with oil before applying it. Always maintain a 1:2 ratio for example, if you take one cup of onion juice, mix it with two cups of oil.
Many onion oils already include beneficial oils like sesame, coconut, almond, or castor oil, each of which supports hair health in different ways.
If you want to make a blend of several oils, keep the same 1:2 ratio for the mixture. Sharmin Kochi recommends using coconut oil as the base since it’s light and easily absorbed.
-
Take 1 cup of coconut oil as the main base.
-
Add ½ cup of olive or almond oil both are thicker and rich in nutrients.
-
Then choose ¼ cup of black seed oil, flaxseed oil, or sesame oil all three are heavier, so they should be used in smaller quantities as supporting oils.
This balance is important to prevent the mixture from becoming too heavy.
Why the pungency helps
The natural pungency in onion oil helps disinfect the scalp, clearing out bacteria and buildup from the pores. Once the pores are clean, new hair growth begins.
For added nourishment, you can mix in vitamin E and collagen capsules but only when the oil is at room temperature. Never add them when the oil is hot or cold from the fridge.
Apply from the roots to the tips, massaging well. If your hair tends to break from the middle, mix in two collagen capsules for extra strength.
How to use it
-
Week 1: Apply daily.
-
Week 2: Apply 3–4 times.
-
Week 3 and onward: Apply 2–3 times a week, then reduce to twice weekly.
Leave the oil on for 1 hour, massaging twice during that time if possible.
Use a hot towel wrap afterward this helps open pores, reduces dryness, and allows nutrients to absorb better.
Avoid leaving it on overnight onion’s strong properties can irritate the scalp’s epidermis layer if kept too long.
