How to Fix Too Much Salt in Cooking
The Chronify
Guests have arrived at your home, and you’ve cooked with great care only for too much salt to ruin the dish. The saltiness is so overwhelming that it’s hard to even take a bite. Such situations are all too familiar for many home cooks, especially homemakers, who often find themselves embarrassed in front of guests when this happens.
If you've accidentally added too much salt to a dish, don't panic there are several quick fixes that can save your meal without starting over. Salt is essential for flavor, but too much of it can ruin even the most perfectly cooked dish. Here are some simple and effective solutions:
1. Potato Slices
Peel and wash a raw potato, then add it to the salty dish. Let it cook for about 20 minutes. The potato will absorb some of the excess salt. You can remove it afterward or leave it in, depending on the dish. For soupy or gravy-based dishes, even potato peels can be used to reduce saltiness.
2. Flour or Dough Balls
Make small balls of wheat flour or all-purpose flour dough and drop them into the dish. Let them simmer for a while they will soak up the excess salt. Be sure to remove the balls before serving. For heavily salted dishes, mix a little oil with the flour before shaping the balls for better effectiveness.
3. Fresh Cream
If you have fresh cream on hand, stir a little into the dish. This will thicken the gravy and help balance out the saltiness by mellowing the overall flavor.
4. Yogurt (Curd)
Plain yogurt especially sour yogurt can neutralize excess salt. Add a teaspoon of yogurt to the dish, stir it in, and taste. It not only reduces saltiness but also enhances the flavor. You can choose between sour or sweet yogurt depending on the dish.
5. Milk
Adding a splash of milk can help balance out the salt, particularly in creamy or dry dishes. If you're cooking something without gravy, add thickened or pre-boiled milk and sauté it a bit to absorb the salt and restore flavor balance.
6. Onion
Both raw and fried onions can help fix a salty dish. If using raw onion, cut into chunks and add them to the dish for a while, then remove. Fried onions can also mask the saltiness while adding a rich flavor.
7. Vinegar and Sugar
Mix 1 tablespoon of vinegar with 2 teaspoons of sugar and add to the dish. The combination of sour and sweet can balance the saltiness effectively and enhance the overall flavor.
Pro Tip: Always taste while cooking and add salt in small increments. If you're unsure, under-salting is safer you can always add more later.
