How to Relieve the Excruciating Pain of Chikungunya

The Chronify

Chikungunya, a mosquito-borne viral disease like dengue, is causing severe pain in joints and muscles, often more debilitating than the fever itself. Knees, ankles, wrists, and other joints can become so painful that walking becomes difficult. People with pre-existing conditions like arthritis or back and neck pain may experience intensified discomfort. Accurate diagnosis requires blood tests for antigen, IgM, and IgG antibodies to avoid confusion with other illnesses.

How to Relieve Chikungunya Pain

There is no specific antiviral treatment for chikungunya; care is mainly symptom-based. Typical painkillers often provide little relief, but medications like paracetamol, anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g., naproxen or diclofenac), and methocarbamol can help reduce joint and muscle pain.

Staying well-hydrated with saline, coconut water, plain water, or fruit juices also helps relax muscles. Physiotherapy can aid recovery, and electrotherapy may reduce pain, but intense exercise or manipulation should be avoided during active infection, as high inflammation can worsen discomfort.
