Many people follow a low-carb diet, reducing staple foods like rice or bread. The extreme form of a low-carb diet is the carnivore diet. In this diet, all plant-based foods are excluded, and only meat, eggs, and dairy are consumed. Some people even eat only beef or mutton, excluding everything else.
Many people compare the carnivore diet to the diet of ancient hunters. However, in modern times, the comparison between farmed or industrially produced animals and wild hunted animals does not hold. According to the United Nations, about one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions come from food production, with the meat industry contributing the largest share. So, while this diet may be harmful to health, it also raises environmental concerns.
What happens in the stomach on a carnivore diet
After starting a carnivore diet, some people report less bloating or gas. One reason for bloating can be foods high in FODMAPs, such as wheat, lentils, or certain vegetables. These foods can cause digestive issues for many people. When they are removed from the diet, bloating naturally decreases, making the digestive system feel better for a few days.
However, when the body does not receive fiber or plant-based foods for a long time, the balance of beneficial gut bacteria is disrupted. Fiber is essential not only for digestion but also for heart health, cancer prevention, diabetes management, and even mental health. Studies have shown that consuming adequate fiber can reduce the risk of cancer by up to 22%.
Nutritional Deficiencies in the Body
Eating only meat can lead to deficiencies in several important nutrients, such as vitamin C, antioxidants, and plant-based chemical compounds (phytonutrients). These substances help reduce inflammation and pain and protect the cells.
Consuming excessive protein requires the body to convert nitrogen into urea, which places extra strain on the liver. The kidneys also have to work harder to eliminate this urea. Over the long term, this can damage both the kidneys and liver.
Studies have shown that a diet rich in fiber, fruits, and vegetables improves brain function and can reduce the risk of depression by up to 19%. On the other hand, the carnivore diet lacks these components, so this eating pattern can have negative long-term effects on mental health.
Risk to the Heart
According to cardiologists, red meat and processed meat contain high amounts of saturated fat and cholesterol. These increase levels of harmful LDL (low-density) cholesterol, which is a major cause of heart disease and stroke.
Regular consumption of red meat can raise the risk of heart disease by up to 20%, and the risk of stroke may even double. Without any fiber in the diet, it becomes difficult for the body to remove excess LDL cholesterol, which puts additional strain on the heart.
