Is it true that gym equipment has more germs than a toilet seat?
The Chronify
We go to the gym to stay fit and healthy—but could you actually be putting your health at risk instead? It’s said that those shiny dumbbells and treadmills might be hiding countless invisible enemies: bacteria.
Recently, a claim has been circulating again on social media suggesting that some gym equipment can harbor 362 times more bacteria than a toilet seat!
In late October 2024, this information went viral across platforms like Facebook, sparking a wave of jokes, debates, and concern among users.
Even mainstream media outlets such as CBC News, Business Insider, and the Chicago Tribune have reported on this widely discussed claim.
In 2016, a U.S.-based fitness equipment review website called FitRated published a report claiming that gym equipment contains 362 times more bacteria than a toilet seat. However, it’s important to note that this was not a comprehensive scientific study.
The report was based on samples taken from only 27 pieces of equipment across three gyms. For comparison, they used toilet seat data from a separate study conducted in two elementary schools in Michigan.
In other words, the claim combined data from two unrelated sources, in different locations and under different conditions, which limits the accuracy and generalizability of the widely shared statistic.
