Cumilla-4 lawmaker clarifies MPs’ position on government facilities, Speaker reinforces policy stance in National Parliament session

Cumilla-4 Member of Parliament Hasnat Abdullah informed the National Parliament that lawmakers are committed to not accepting tax-free vehicles or government plots as personal benefits, while also criticizing media reports he described as misrepresenting his earlier remarks.

Speaking during a parliamentary session on Wednesday, Hasnat said some media outlets had published what he called “baseless” interpretations of his statement regarding the use of government vehicles.

He clarified that MPs maintain a clear and collective position against receiving tax-free cars and government plots, adding that this stance has already set a precedent in the current parliament.

“Our position remains firm and unchanged. Members of parliament are committed to not taking tax-free cars and government plots,” he said.

He further explained that MPs only seek access to official transport for performing their duties, similar to other government officials. He noted that administrators such as Deputy Commissioners, Zila Parishad chairpersons, and Upazila Nirbahi Officers use official vehicles during their tenure, and MPs should have comparable facilities strictly for work purposes.

Hasnat emphasized that such facilities would not continue after the end of an MP’s term.

Following his remarks, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed reiterated the parliamentary position, stating that elected representatives would not receive government plots or vehicles as personal privileges.

“There is no ambiguity in this matter. Members of parliament will not take government plots or cars as personal benefits,” the Speaker said, reinforcing the policy stance.
