Arthritis, commonly known as rheumatism, is essentially inflammation of the joints. It can affect one or more joints and is most commonly seen in older adults.

In research it has been observed that one out of every five persons suffers from this disease. In such a situation, much like in other countries, World Arthritis Day 2025 is being observed in Bangladesh to raise awareness about arthritis. This year’s theme is “Achieve Your Dreams”, which aims to improve the quality of life for people living with arthritis and musculoskeletal diseases (ARMD), and to inspire them to fulfill their dreams.

To promote awareness about this day, various programs will be organized by Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) and the Rheumatology Society of Bangladesh, in both public and private sectors.

The most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Arthritis is essentially a composite of many types. Around 200 types of arthritis-related conditions are known, although some common types are much more widely recognized.

Generally, the elderly are at highest risk. Having parents or siblings with arthritis increases risk. Meanwhile, gout most often affects men. Prior joint injury or excessive obesity also raises the likelihood of developing the disease. Although prevention is better than cure, once someone is affected, certain measures can temporarily improve the condition. Rather than relying solely on medication, focusing on daily diet and lifestyle changes can help manage the problem. For example, adopt a healthy and balanced diet as a natural remedy, perform regular appropriate exercise, avoid smoking altogether, and refrain from alcohol.
