Bangladesh’s Renowned Doctor Completes 2000th Kidney Transplant Free of Charge
Professor Kamrul Islam, a recipient of the Independence Award, has reached an extraordinary milestone by completing his 2000th kidney transplant, all performed without charging any fees. The historic surgery was conducted at his Centre for Kidney Diseases and Urology (CKDU) in Dhaka’s Shyamoli area on December 23, 2025.
Dr. Islam, who has led nearly half of the kidney transplants in Bangladesh, continues to perform an average of five kidney transplants per week. Despite this significant achievement, he remains humble and focused on his mission: to provide high-quality medical care to low-income patients. He stated, "Our goal is not business, but to bring as many patients as possible under proper medical care while maintaining the quality of service."
Under Dr. Kamrul Islam’s leadership, Bangladesh has become a key player in kidney transplantation, with his hospital offering the procedures without any surgeon's fees. Patients only need to pay for medications, anesthesia, lab tests, and follow-up care, which amounts to approximately two lakh taka.
Born in 1965 in Ishwardi, Pabna, Dr. Kamrul Islam is highly decorated for his contributions to the field, having received numerous awards, including the prestigious Independence Award in 2022. His success rate exceeds 95%, and he has made a profound impact on Bangladesh's kidney transplant program.
As the number of kidney disease patients continues to rise in Bangladesh, Dr. Islam’s work remains crucial in improving access to life-saving treatments for those in need.
