Symptoms that could be a warning of cancer

The Chronify

Some common signs of cancer that can appear in both men and women include changes in the skin, such as lumps or sores that bleed easily, wounds that do not heal, and changes in the size or color of moles. Other symptoms may include unusual fatigue, persistent pain, unexplained weight loss, and difficulty in chewing or swallowing food.

Cancer, a deadly disease, spreads rapidly from one cell to another. If not detected in its early stages, it increases the risk of death. When cancer develops in the body, certain common changes can be observed in both men and women.

Let’s look at the signs of cancer in the body:

1. Weight Loss

One of the primary signs of cancer is unexplained weight loss. Even without exercise, physical activity, or diet changes, if you continuously lose weight, you should consult a doctor immediately.

Persistent fatigue is another warning. Feeling tired after work is normal, but if you feel constantly exhausted even without exertion, it may indicate a serious problem. For example, colon or stomach cancer can cause internal bleeding, which weakens the body further.

2. Body Pain

If you have bone cancer, early symptoms may include joint pain. A brain tumor can cause headaches that persist for days and do not improve with treatment. Long-term, recurring pain in the same area should prompt a doctor’s consultation.

Bone pain may be accompanied by fever. If a fever lasts more than three days, it is concerning. Certain blood cancers, like lymphoma, can cause fever for several days or even weeks. Professional medical advice is essential.

3. Cough

A persistent cough can be a major symptom of lung cancer. Long-lasting coughs may also indicate cancers of the voice box (larynx) or thyroid.

4. Bleeding

If you notice regular bleeding in stool, it could indicate colon or rectal cancer. Tumors in the urinary tract may also cause blood in urine.

When the body lacks sufficient red blood cells, anemia occurs. Red blood cells are produced in the bone marrow, which can be damaged by cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma.

In men, the most common cancers are prostate, lung, and colorectal cancers. Prostate cancer can cause difficulty urinating. If you experience urinary problems, blood in urine, or pain, consult a doctor immediately.

5. Skin Changes Indicating Cancer

Cancer can also manifest on your skin and appearance. For example:

  • Skin cancer may present as unusual moles, spots, or brown/black patches.

  • Yellow or red spots with itching or rashes may indicate liver, ovarian, kidney cancer, or lymphoma.

  • Persistent sores in the mouth could be a sign of oral cancer, with risk factors including smoking, chewing tobacco, or heavy alcohol consumption.

Other signs include testicular pain, which may indicate testicular cancer in men.

In women, the most common cancers are breast, lung, and colorectal cancer. Women may also develop cervical, endometrial, vaginal, or vulvar cancer. Symptoms like vaginal bleeding or discharge, loss of appetite, abdominal pain or swelling, and changes or pain in the breast should prompt immediate consultation with a doctor.
