Why do we wake up in the middle of the night even after going to bed on time?
The Chronify
Question: I am in the eighth grade. I go to bed by 10 PM and fall asleep quickly. But somehow, my sleep breaks between 2 AM and 3 AM. Once I wake up, no matter how hard I try, I can’t fall back asleep. Due to tuition and coaching classes, I can’t take naps during the day. Because of this, I feel drowsy all day and become irritable. How can I get rid of this problem?
The advice was given by Professor Dr. Md. Zakir Hossain Sarkar, Senior Consultant of the Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine Department at LabAid Cardiac Hospital.
Advice:
You didn’t mention your exact age, but since you’re in eighth grade, I assume you’re around 14-15 years old.
Your sleep problem is called middle insomnia, which means you fall asleep but can’t stay asleep for long. Making some positive changes in your daily routine can help reduce this issue.
-
Avoid drinking tea, coffee, or smoking completely.
-
Try to do light exercise during the day, but always before the evening.
-
Avoid taking naps during the day.
-
Refrain from reading books or using your phone while lying in bed.
-
Drinking a cup of milk before bedtime can help improve your sleep.
-
If you have long-term physical pain or feelings of depression, consult a doctor.
-
If your sleep problems persist despite these changes, seek help from a sleep medicine specialist.
