High-level defense talks with Pakistan may see the inclusion of JF-17 Thunder in Bangladesh's air force fleet.
Bangladesh has recently engaged in high-level defense discussions with Pakistan regarding the potential acquisition of the JF-17 Thunder fighter jet. The talks, held during a visit to Islamabad by Bangladesh's Air Chief Marshal Hassan Mahmud Khan, focused on the purchase of the JF-17 Thunder aircraft, alongside broader defense cooperation between the two nations.
According to a statement from Pakistan’s military media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), discussions revolved around enhancing operational cooperation, training, technology transfer, maintenance of older fleets, and joint aerospace projects. The JF-17 Thunder, a multi-role fighter developed by China and Pakistan, has proven its capabilities in conflicts with India in 2019 and 2025, as claimed by Pakistan.
During the visit, Bangladesh's Air Chief Marshal was briefed on Pakistan’s progress and the full-scale training structure available, from basic to advanced courses. The discussions also included the fast-tracked delivery of Super Mushshak training aircraft, along with long-term technical and training assistance.
Bangladesh’s Air Force has shown interest in benefiting from Pakistan’s combat experience, specifically in operational efficiency, airspace surveillance, and the integration of air defense radar systems. This visit marks a significant milestone in strengthening defense ties between Bangladesh and Pakistan, with both countries committed to long-term strategic partnerships.
The JF-17 Thunder is a versatile, lightweight multirole combat jet capable of conducting air-to-air combat, ground strikes, surveillance, and precision attacks, with a top speed of approximately 2,205 km/h and the ability to carry up to 12,700 kg of weight at takeoff.
