Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said Ankara is closely following developments in Syria and remains committed to regional stability. He also reaffirmed Türkiye’s coordination with the United States on efforts to establish peace in Gaza.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and US President Donald Trump held a phone conversation to discuss bilateral relations as well as key regional and global developments, Türkiye’s Communications Directorate said on Tuesday.
During the call, Erdogan told Trump that Türkiye is “closely” monitoring the situation in Syria, stressing that the country’s unity, solidarity and territorial integrity are of critical importance to Ankara. The two leaders also exchanged views on counterterrorism efforts, particularly the fight against the Daesh terror group, and discussed the situation of Daesh detainees held in Syrian prisons.
Erdogan underlined that “a peaceful Syria, free from terrorism and developing in all aspects, would contribute to the stability of the region,” according to the statement.
On Gaza, Erdogan said that efforts to establish lasting peace are ongoing and emphasized that Türkiye will continue to act in coordination with the United States on the issue. He also thanked Trump for inviting him to join the Board of Peace for Gaza.
Earlier on Tuesday, Trump described his call with Erdogan as “very important,” saying he liked the Turkish leader “a lot.”
Last Friday, the White House announced the formation of the Board of Peace to oversee the implementation of Trump’s 20-point plan aimed at ending the war in Gaza, rebuilding the territory, mobilising international resources, and ensuring accountability during Gaza’s transition from conflict to peace and development.
In addition, the US has established the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, along with executive bodies to support the transitional framework. Trump has invited several world leaders, including Erdogan, to participate in the initiative as discussions on Gaza’s post-war future continue.
