India has confirmed that it is closely monitoring the discussions between Bangladesh and Pakistan over the potential acquisition of JF-17 Thunder fighter jets. India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randeep Jaiswal, stated that the country is paying close attention to situations that could affect national security.
During a weekly media briefing on January 9, Jaiswal responded to questions about the recent visit of Bangladesh Air Force Chief, Air Chief Marshal Hassan Mahmud Khan, to Islamabad, where discussions regarding the fighter jet acquisition took place. Jaiswal emphasized, "We are keeping a sharp eye on all matters that could have an impact on national security."
The briefing also addressed inquiries regarding the resumption of direct flights between Dhaka and Karachi, which is set to begin on January 29. In response to a question about whether Bangladesh had sought India's permission to use its airspace, Jaiswal clarified that such matters would be resolved according to the existing aviation service agreement between India and Bangladesh.
Additionally, Jaiswal reiterated India’s stance on the attacks on minorities in Bangladesh, expressing concern over repeated attacks by extremists on minority homes and businesses. He called for swift and strict action against such communal violence, stressing the need to address these issues firmly to prevent further insecurity among minorities.
On the issue of non-participation of major political parties in national elections in Bangladesh and Myanmar, Jaiswal stated that India consistently advocates for inclusive elections to ensure a credible mandate.
