Iran war enters 36th day with continued strikes and no clear diplomatic breakthrough

The Chronify

The war on Iran entered its 36th day with a sharp escalation after Iran said it had downed two US military aircraft, while American officials confirmed that an F-15E Strike Eagle was shot down over Iran and that a separate A-10 was hit and crashed over Kuwait after its pilot ejected. One member of the F-15E crew has been rescued, but another remains missing, triggering a high risk US search and rescue effort. Two Black Hawk helicopters involved in the operation were also hit by Iranian fire but made it out of Iranian airspace.

The loss of the F-15E marks the first confirmed downing of a US fighter jet over Iran since the war began on February 28 and undercuts repeated White House claims that Iran’s air defenses had been effectively neutralized. Iranian officials and state media presented the incident as proof that Tehran still retains meaningful military capacity despite weeks of US and Israeli strikes. In recent days, senior Iranian leaders have also appeared publicly in Tehran in an effort to project resilience and show that the state remains in control.

Diplomatic prospects remain uncertain. Iranian media, citing an unnamed source, reported that Tehran rejected a US proposal for a 48 hour ceasefire that had been conveyed through an intermediary country. Washington did not immediately confirm the proposal or comment on the report. At the same time, Iranian officials have kept up public warnings that further attacks on the country’s infrastructure will bring broader retaliation.

The conflict is also continuing to spread beyond Iran itself. Israel carried out new strikes in Beirut on Friday and Washington warned that Iran could target Lebanese universities. Across the Gulf, earlier Iranian attacks on industrial and energy sites in Bahrain and the UAE have already shown how vulnerable regional civilian infrastructure remains as the war widens.

For the United States, the downed aircraft adds new military and political pressure. Reuters reported that 13 US service members have been killed and more than 300 wounded since the start of the war, while a recent Reuters Ipsos poll found that two thirds of Americans want Washington to end its involvement quickly, even if it means falling short of the administration’s stated aims. The loss of a fighter jet and the search for a missing crew member are likely to intensify scrutiny of a war that the White House has insisted is nearing its end.
