Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has warned that any attack on Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei would amount to a declaration of war, as tensions escalate amid protests, economic pressure and renewed clashes with Washington.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday issued a stark warning, saying any attack targeting Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei would be treated as a declaration of war against Iran.
“An attack on the great leader of our country is tantamount to a full-scale war with the Iranian nation,” Pezeshkian wrote in a post on X, sharply escalating Tehran’s rhetoric at a time of mounting domestic unrest and external pressure.
His remarks came in the context of renewed verbal confrontations with the United States, following comments by Donald Trump urging Iranians to continue protests and suggesting outside support could be forthcoming. Iranian officials have accused Washington of encouraging instability and interfering in the country’s internal affairs.
Pezeshkian also linked Iran’s worsening economic conditions to long-standing US-led sanctions, arguing they have directly contributed to rising living costs and public dissatisfaction.
“If the people of Iran face hardship and difficulties in their lives, one of the main reasons is the longstanding enmity and inhumane sanctions imposed by the United States government,” he said.
Iran has faced sustained protests in recent months, driven by economic strain, unemployment and political grievances. The government has responded with a combination of crackdowns and strong warnings to foreign powers, framing internal unrest as being exacerbated by external pressure.
The latest comments underline growing tensions between Iran and Washington, as well as Tehran’s determination to portray any threat to its supreme leader as an existential challenge, raising fears of further escalation in an already volatile regional and international environment.
