Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar dies in plane crash

Ajit Pawar, the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, has died in a plane crash, Indian media reported on Wednesday. Four other passengers travelling with him were also killed in the incident.
According to Press Trust of India, the accident occurred during an emergency landing at Baramati Airport in Pune district of Maharashtra, reports NDTV.
India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), said a chartered aircraft crash-landed at the airport on Wednesday morning, killing all five people on board, including Ajit Pawar.
The DGCA said the Learjet-45 aircraft, operated by a private firm, lost control while attempting to land at Baramati Airport and crashed on the runway.
Ajit Pawar was one of the most influential political figures in Maharashtra and had served as deputy chief minister six times under different governments.
The 66-year-old leader was the nephew of veteran politician and Nationalist Congress Party founder Sharad Pawar and cousin of Lok Sabha MP Supriya Sule.
He is survived by his wife Sunetra Pawar and his sons Parth and Jay Pawar.
