25 Injured in Barguna After Rabid Dog Attacks, Three in Critical Condition

A stray dog suspected to be rabid attacked residents across three villages in Patharghata, Barguna, sending at least 25 people to the hospital, including three in serious condition.

At least 25 people were hospitalized after being attacked by a suspected rabid stray dog in Patharghata upazila of Barguna on Saturday. Among the injured, three were reported in critical condition and were referred to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for urgent treatment.

 

The attacks occurred between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM in the villages of Padma, Ruhita, and Haritona under Sadar Union. Residents began arriving at Patharghata Upazila Health Complex throughout the morning, many suffering from dog bites, with some in severe condition.

 

Dr. Rakhal Biswas, the Residential Medical Officer at the health complex, confirmed the incident, stating that multiple patients required immediate medical care due to serious injuries.

 

According to locals, a black-and-white stray dog, believed to be rabid, roamed through Padma, Ruhita, and Haritona villages, attacking people indiscriminately. Hiru Jamaddar, a resident of Padma, said that three members of his family were bitten before the dog moved toward Haritona.

 

Meanwhile, Mohammad Sahin, a former Union Parishad member from Haritona, reported that his uncle, Abul Kalam, suffered severe injuries after the dog tore flesh from his cheek. He was immediately transferred to Barishal for emergency treatment.

 

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and are actively working to locate and control the animal to prevent further attacks.
