Customs Officials Confiscate 1,340 Cartons of Smuggled Cigarettes
Customs officials at Chattogram Shah Amanat International Airport seized 1,340 cartons of imported cigarettes, valued at approximately 30 lakh Taka, on Wednesday night. The cigarettes were confiscated from passengers' baggage around 9:45 PM.
According to the Customs officials, 200 cartons of cigarettes were found in the luggage of passenger Minhajul Karim, and 350 cartons in the luggage of Minhajul Islam, both arriving from Dubai. Additionally, 690 cartons were seized from abandoned baggage. In total, the seized cigarettes amounted to 248,000 sticks.
Under baggage rules, each passenger is allowed to bring one carton of cigarettes without having to pay duties. Any excess is prohibited. According to the import policy, cigarettes must also bear a warning in Bengali stating, "Smoking is harmful to health."
The seized cigarettes have been stored at the Chattogram Customs House warehouse, and legal action is being taken in accordance with customs regulations.
