Bangladesh, Malaysia Explore LNG Supply and Investment Cooperation

Bangladesh and Malaysia have agreed to deepen cooperation in the energy and investment sectors following a telephone conversation between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

In a statement shared on Facebook on Tuesday, Anwar Ibrahim said the discussion focused on strengthening the long-standing partnership between the two countries through expanded collaboration in key economic sectors.


Energy security featured prominently during the talks, with the Malaysian prime minister acknowledging Bangladesh's ongoing natural gas supply challenges. He said both leaders explored possible cooperation involving Malaysia's state-owned energy company, PETRONAS, including the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to help address Bangladesh's immediate energy needs.

Beyond energy, the two leaders also reviewed ongoing economic cooperation and investment opportunities. Anwar said they discussed the progress of investments involving telecommunications company Axiata, as well as the potential for strategic collaboration with MMC Port, aimed at boosting trade, infrastructure development and bilateral economic ties.


He noted that expanding investment partnerships would create new opportunities for businesses in both countries while strengthening overall economic cooperation.


Anwar reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to maintaining its close relationship with Bangladesh, describing the partnership as one built on mutual respect, practical cooperation and a shared goal of delivering tangible benefits to the people of both nations.


The latest discussions come as Bangladesh continues efforts to diversify its energy sources, attract greater foreign investment and strengthen regional partnerships to support long-term economic growth and energy security.
