Tarique Rahman inaugurates initial Hajj flight in Dhaka, promises improved arrangements and reduced expenses from next year
Tarique Rahman has officially inaugurated the first Hajj flight for 2026, assuring pilgrims that the government is working to further reduce costs and improve overall arrangements in the coming years.
The inaugural flight (BG3001) was launched shortly before midnight on Friday from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, carrying 419 pilgrims to Saudi Arabia. Prior to the departure, the prime minister visited the Ashkona Hajj Camp, where he greeted pilgrims and exchanged warm wishes.
Addressing the pilgrims, Tarique Rahman said the government had limited scope to make major changes this year, as most arrangements were finalized before it assumed office. Despite that, he noted that authorities managed to reduce Hajj package costs by around Tk12,000. He expressed optimism that expenses would be further lowered next year while ensuring smoother services for pilgrims.
The prime minister also urged pilgrims to pray for the country’s peace and stability, emphasizing the importance of their spiritual journey. He later boarded the flight briefly, interacting with passengers and offering prayers for their safe travel.
According to the Religious Affairs Ministry, a total of 78,500 pilgrims from Bangladesh are expected to perform Hajj this year. On the first day, 14 flights are scheduled to operate, with carriers including Biman Bangladesh Airlines, Saudia, and Flynas.
Hajj is expected to take place around late May, subject to moon sighting, with return flights scheduled to begin at the end of the month and continue through early July.
