Bangladesh Cricket Board Joins National Farewell from Sylhet Stadium Amid BPL Matches
The state funeral of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia took place at Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka, amidst an overwhelming atmosphere of grief, with millions in attendance. Despite being unable to attend in person due to the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) joined the Janaza ceremony through a live feed at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
At 3:03 PM on Wednesday, December 31, the Namaz-e-Janaza began at Manik Mia Avenue and concluded at 3:05 PM. The prayer was led by Mufti Abdul Malek, the Imam of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
BCB officials, media personnel, players, and staff gathered at Sylhet Stadium, watching the proceedings on a giant screen, and paid their final respects to the late leader, reflecting the widespread reverence across the nation.
Begum Khaleda Zia had been in intensive care at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka since November 23, 2025, and despite critical health complications, she passed away at 6 AM on December 30 at the age of 80.
