Pre-dawn attack in Ramu leaves two dead as elephants enter residential settlement

A mother and her young daughter were killed in a wild elephant attack in Cox’s Bazar’s Ramu area early Thursday morning, authorities confirmed.

The incident occurred around 4:30am in West Khuniapalong under Khuniapalong Union, where a herd of elephants reportedly entered a local settlement and attacked a house while the occupants were asleep.

The victims were identified as 25-year-old Asma Begum, wife of Akram Mia, and her three-year-old daughter Mohsena Begum. Both died at the scene.

Local Union Parishad member Zainal Abedin Babul said the elephants suddenly stormed Abdul Karim’s colony at dawn, leading to the fatal attack. Residents later recovered the bodies from the damaged home.

Ramu Police Station Officer-in-Charge Monirul Islam confirmed the incident, stating that police rushed to the scene upon receiving the information. The bodies have been sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

The incident has once again highlighted the growing human-wildlife conflict in forest-adjacent areas, where elephant intrusions into human settlements have become increasingly common.
