The launch terminal in Nalchiti Upazila of Jhalakathi district is set to be renamed in honour of Shaheed Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inquilab Mancha and a native of the area.
Barishal BIWTA Executive Engineer Amjad Hossain confirmed the decision. He said Osman Hadi was born in Nalchiti, and in recognition of his life and sacrifice, authorities have decided to name the Nalchiti Launch Terminal after him.
According to BIWTA officials, renovation and repainting work at the terminal is currently in progress. Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (Retd) M. Sakhawat Hossain is expected to visit the site by next Sunday to inspect the ongoing work.
Local residents have welcomed the move. Monir Hossain, a resident of Nalchiti Municipality, said people in the area had long demanded a lasting memorial in Osman Hadi’s name. “Naming the launch terminal after him will be a meaningful tribute. The people of Nalchiti are grateful to the authorities for this decision,” he added.
Osman Hadi was shot on Friday afternoon, December 12. He was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition and later shifted to Evercare Hospital. As his condition worsened, he was flown to Singapore by air ambulance on December 15 for advanced treatment.
Despite medical efforts, Osman Hadi passed away on December 18 while receiving treatment in Singapore. His body was later brought back to Bangladesh, where he was laid to rest beside the Central Mosque of Dhaka University, near the grave of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.
