New initiative aims to expand women’s access to higher education while introducing additional welfare measures across the country.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has announced that education for girls in Bangladesh will be made free up to the undergraduate and degree levels, in a major step aimed at strengthening female education nationwide.
He made the announcement on April 27 while addressing a political rally at Jashore Eidgah Maidan, where he spoke about future government plans and ongoing policy initiatives.
The prime minister said the decision builds on earlier efforts to expand access to education for women. He noted that free education for girls was previously introduced at the secondary level and later extended to higher secondary education, adding that the new policy aims to complete that process by covering undergraduate studies.
In addition to the education initiative, he outlined several welfare programmes focused on women. These include plans to expand the Family Card programme to benefit a larger segment of the population and the introduction of LPG gas cards to reduce household burdens.
The prime minister also announced that several closed industrial units across the country would be reopened in the coming months as part of efforts to boost employment and economic activity.
Addressing the political landscape, he criticized opposition groups and warned against actions that could disrupt public order. He emphasized that maintaining stability remains a priority and stated that measures would be taken to prevent disruptions such as strikes that could affect daily life.
