A student in Pirojpur’s Jianagar upazila approached police twice to prevent her planned early marriage and continue her studies
A schoolgirl in Pirojpur has sought assistance from police to stop her own child marriage, just days before the start of her Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations.
The incident took place in the Indurkani Sadar Union under Jianagar upazila, where the student, an SSC candidate for 2026, visited the local police station twice on Saturday seeking protection from being forced into marriage.
According to police and local sources, the girl’s family, facing financial hardship, had arranged her marriage after receiving a proposal they considered suitable. However, the student expressed her strong unwillingness to get married at this stage and stated her desire to continue her education.
The student reportedly went to the police station on her own to request intervention after facing pressure from her family. Following the complaint, police called her guardians to the station and obtained a written undertaking promising not to proceed with the marriage.
Authorities later handed the girl back to her family in the presence of local community leaders after securing the commitment.
The student told reporters that she wants to complete her SSC examinations and continue her studies to become self-reliant in the future.
Her father, however, claimed that his daughter is over 18 years old and said the marriage decision was made based on family circumstances, while also acknowledging her interest in continuing education.
A teacher from her school said the institution is actively working to prevent her from dropping out and ensuring she can complete her exams.
Police confirmed that the matter was handled seriously and resolved through legal counseling and community mediation, with a formal written undertaking from the family to stop the marriage process.
