Students Protest by Locking Deans' Offices, Call for Resignations of Six Pro-Awami Deans
At Rajshahi University (RU), students have locked the Deans' Complex in protest, demanding the resignation of six pro-Awami deans. The protest began at 10:30 AM on Sunday, December 21, with students citing grievances related to the alleged political affiliations and actions of the deans.
According to Saluddin Ammar, the General Secretary of the RU Central Students' Union (Raksu), a preliminary list of teachers who allegedly acted against students' interests will be published based on documents gathered over the past three months. Ammar stated that the protest stems from perceived authoritarianism in class scheduling and absenteeism, with teachers reportedly taking unauthorized leaves.
Additionally, university senate member Akil Bin Taleb emphasized that despite demands, pro-Awami figures remain in key positions, which he claims has led to a politicized administration. He also referenced the recent killing of a student activist in Dhaka as part of the ongoing tension.
The university’s Proctor, Mahbubur Rahman, responded to the situation by confirming that the protest was known through social media. He reassured that actions were being taken to ensure teachers’ safety and avoid any untoward incidents.
The protest continues, with students vowing not to open the locked offices until their demands are met.
