Heartbreaking incident highlights social neglect as mother struggles for survival after being denied refuge by in-laws
A tragic incident in Gazipur has drawn widespread attention, where a widow has been forced to live beside her husband’s grave along with her two young children after reportedly being denied shelter by her in-laws.
The incident took place in Kaliakair upazila’s Uttar Laskar Chala village, where Sonia Begum now lives under extremely difficult conditions. With her nine-year-old daughter and 18-month-old infant son, she remains without a stable home and depends on limited community support.
According to local sources, Sonia’s husband, Sujon Mahmud, died after a prolonged illness, leaving the family in severe distress. She alleges that despite having financial capability, her in-laws failed to provide proper medical treatment. After his death, she was reportedly told that she and her children could no longer stay in the family home.
Sonia further claimed that her father-in-law, Kofil Uddin, and mother-in-law refused to take responsibility for them. She also alleged that her father-in-law left during the burial process, which caused anger among local residents.
Initially, a local resident provided temporary shelter to Sonia and her children out of compassion. However, due to concerns over potential legal complications, that support could not continue permanently. With no alternative options, she eventually took refuge beside her husband’s grave.
Speaking tearfully, Sonia said she has nowhere else to go and is struggling to survive with her children.
Local residents have expressed concern and urged the family to reconsider their position for the sake of the children’s future. Community members and social activists have called for immediate administrative intervention to ensure safe housing and legal protection for the widow and her children.
Meanwhile, Kaliakair Police Station officials said efforts are ongoing to mediate between the parties. Authorities added that legal action may be taken if a resolution cannot be reached.
