Cold Wave to Impact Country with Severe Chill Expected
The Meteorological Department has issued a warning for a significant drop in temperatures starting tomorrow, signaling the intensification of winter. The country is expected to experience four to five cold waves this month, with temperatures potentially dropping to as low as 4°C during intense cold spells.
According to a forecast released by the department on January 1, 2026, three mild to moderate cold waves and one to two moderate to severe cold waves are expected this month. During these periods, the temperature may fall to 6-4°C, with the northern regions and river basin areas feeling the cold most severely.
Additionally, dense fog is expected from midnight until morning across the country, which may persist until noon in some areas, causing further chills. The fog will reduce the temperature difference between day and night, making the cold feel even more intense.
While the country is expected to experience normal rainfall this month, there is no forecast for cyclones or low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal.
In December 2025, rainfall was 99.3% below normal, and the lowest temperature of the season, 7.5°C, was recorded in Gopalganj on December 31.
The cold wave has already begun to affect several regions. Yesterday, cold waves were observed in seven districts, and although temperatures may rise slightly today, they are expected to drop again by Sunday.
