The Importance of Praying in the First Row in the Mosque

The Chronify

The significance and virtues of prayer are mentioned repeatedly in the Qur’an and Hadith. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) strongly encouraged Muslims to perform their prayers in congregation at the mosque. The virtue of praying in the first row of the congregation is immense and highly rewarding.

The Virtue of Praying in the First Row of the Congregation

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) strongly encouraged the companions to stand in the front row during congregational prayer. He once said to the companions who were hesitant to move forward:

“Move forward and follow me, so that those who come after you may follow you. Do not hold back, for if people continue to withdraw, Allah will keep them back as well.”
(Sahih Muslim)

In another Hadith, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

“If people knew the reward for giving the Adhan and for being in the first row, and had no way to get it except by drawing lots, they would definitely draw lots for it. And if they knew the reward for coming early to prayer, they would race to it. And if they knew the reward for ‘Isha and Fajr prayers in congregation, they would come even if crawling.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

The virtues of standing as close as possible to the front in prayer and filling the gaps in the rows have also been emphasized in various Hadiths.

Bara’ ibn ‘Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

“The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to say: ‘Allah sends blessings upon those who join the first row, and the angels pray for them.’ He also said: ‘There is no step more beloved to Allah than the one a person takes to fill a gap in the row.’”
(Abu Dawood: 543)

In another narration, the Prophet (peace be upon him) addressed his companions and said:

“Will you not form rows the way the angels form rows in the presence of their Lord?”
The companions asked, “O Messenger of Allah, how do the angels form rows before their Lord?”
He replied:
“They complete the first rows first and stand closely together without leaving gaps.”
(Sahih Muslim: 430)
