Question: How can we hear the various sounds coming from inside our stomach? Does that mean our skin or body surface conducts sound?
Answer: Various sounds can be produced in our stomach for different reasons. It happens most often after eating, during the process of digestion in the stomach. If there is any problem with the food, digestion may be affected. During this time, gas can also be produced in the stomach. When gas forms during digestion, it naturally tries to rise upward. As it moves, a kind of gurgling sound can be heard. We can usually hear this sound with our own ears. This sound is not conducted through the skin.
However, if gas formation causes a burning sensation, the feeling can be transmitted through the body’s nervous system, which is why we feel stomach pain. If the food takes some time to be fully digested, it moves from the small intestine to the large intestine in a partially digested state. During this process, gas can form in the intestines. This gas moves downward and exits the body with sound through the large intestine.
Often, we hear these sounds quite loudly. These sounds are not conducted through the skin or nerves, but through the air.
