Attempt to produce octane-like fuel using online tutorial ends in fatal blast in Sonagazi

A man in Sonagazi upazila of Feni has died after a deadly explosion occurred while he was reportedly attempting to produce fuel using online instructions. The victim, identified as Nur Alam Masud (45), owner of “Sotota Oil Mills,” died while undergoing treatment at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Saturday morning.

According to reports, the incident took place on 14 April in the Nazrul Primary School area of Sonagazi municipality, where Masud and a colleague were trying to create an octane-like substance using a home-based experimental process learned from YouTube. During the attempt, excessive heat reportedly caused a pipe to burst with a loud explosion, severely burning both individuals.

Local residents rushed the injured men to Sonagazi Upazila Health Complex before they were transferred to Feni Sadar Hospital and later shifted to Dhaka for advanced treatment. Masud succumbed to his injuries four days after the incident.

Witnesses described him as a socially active and well-known figure in the area who often experimented with new ideas. However, locals also expressed shock over the risky nature of the experiment that led to the tragedy.

Police from Sonagazi Model Police Station said they had visited the scene and confirmed the incident. Authorities added that legal steps will be taken following the investigation.

The incident has sparked renewed concern over unsafe DIY industrial experiments based on online content without proper technical knowledge or safety measures.
