In South America’s World Cup qualifiers, the current 10-team home-and-away format has been in place since 1996. For the first time since then, Brazil have finished a qualifying campaign with fewer than 30 points. Previously, Brazil’s worst performance came during the qualifiers for the 2002 World Cup. Despite a turbulent campaign, the team went on to win their fifth World Cup title in South Korea and Japan.
