A new spin bowling machine has been added to Bangladesh’s national team training setup, enhancing batting practice against spin.
For the first time, Bangladesh has introduced a spin bowling machine to its cricket training system. The machine was unveiled on Monday during a national team skill camp, marking a significant step forward in modern training facilities.
Bowling machines are already a common tool in cricket practice, primarily used to simulate fast deliveries and bouncers. However, previous machines in Bangladesh were limited to pace bowling, making this the country’s first dedicated spin bowling machine.
Interestingly, spin-friendly conditions are typical across the subcontinent, where teams traditionally rely on skilled spin bowlers. As a result, spin bowling machines are more commonly used in countries like England, Australia, and New Zealand, where quality spin options are comparatively limited.
Former cricketer and current cricket operations official Shahriar Nafees confirmed that the machine was purchased for £10,000, which is approximately 1.6 million Bangladeshi taka. Due to its heavy weight, it was transported by sea rather than by air.
The machine, known as “Merlyn by Bola,” offers advanced features, allowing players to practice against off-spin, leg-spin, and arm deliveries. It also enables adjustments in length and speed, and can operate in both manual and automatic modes. In automatic mode, players can face 25 to 30 deliveries consecutively.
The addition of this technology is expected to significantly improve batting preparation, especially against spin, which plays a crucial role in subcontinental cricket conditions.
