Responding to Southgate's knighthood, The Football Association (FA) chief Debbie Hewitt said: "He (Southgate) embodies the best of English football. He brought our supporters closer to the team than ever before, held true to his beliefs and inspired the players by sharing the pride of representing England. It was special to know him as a person and a coach. All of us who know his thoughtfulness, dedication and leadership are delighted by this news." The other sportsman to be knighted in the New Year's Honours list is Gerald Davies. The former Wales rugby player served as the country's president from 2019 to 2023.
