Religious Leaders in India Demand Mustafizur's Exclusion from IPL Due to Alleged Persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh
Mustafizur Rahman, the Bangladesh pace bowler, has faced severe criticism from a section of the Indian public ever since he was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for ₹9.2 crore in the IPL auction. A segment of Indian supporters has called for his exclusion from the IPL, citing allegations of the mistreatment of Hindus in Bangladesh.
Now, the controversy has escalated, with religious leaders from the city of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, issuing threats of vandalism if the cricketer plays in the IPL. The threats, made by the head priest of the Rinmukteshwar Mahadev Temple, Mahavir Nath, have raised concerns. The priest stated that their followers would "take action" due to the alleged oppression of Hindus in Bangladesh. Several other organizations have echoed similar threats.
The fury surrounding Mustafizur’s inclusion in the IPL stems from recent incidents of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. On December 18, a man named Deep Chand Das was beaten and hung from a tree before being set on fire in Mymensingh under charges of religious blasphemy. No evidence was found to support the claims of blasphemy. Similarly, on December 24, Amrit Mondal died after a mob beating in Rajbari, reportedly linked to extortion activities, with firearms discovered on his person.
These incidents have fueled anti-Bangladesh sentiments among certain factions in India, leading to their demand that Mustafizur not participate in the IPL.
