World Cup Final Transport Fare Sparks Outrage as Fans Face $150 Train Cost

Supporters criticise 10-fold hike in rail fare to MetLife Stadium for 2026 World Cup matches in New York-New Jersey
Football fans attending the 2026 World Cup final at the MetLife Stadium are facing widespread backlash after authorities confirmed a steep increase in train fares for matchday travel.
Officials announced on 17 April that a round-trip rail ticket from New York to the stadium will cost $150, a price nearly 10 times higher than the usual fare of $12.90 for the 36-mile journey. The route connects New York City with the New Jersey sports complex hosting eight tournament matches, including the final.
New Jersey Transit said the special fare is required for event-day services. Its CEO Chris Kolluri explained that the $150 ticket covers round-trip travel between New York and MetLife Stadium during World Cup fixtures.
However, the announcement triggered strong criticism from fans, transport advocates and political figures. Only around 40,000 train tickets will be available for the stadium events, intensifying concerns over accessibility. Parking charges have also been set at $225 due to limited availability, further adding to costs for attendees.
Local residents and supporters described the pricing as excessive, arguing that fans are being unfairly burdened. Critics also pointed out that while transport costs fall on public systems, tournament revenues are expected to reach billions of dollars.
FIFA World Cup 2026 organisers defended the broader financial structure, stating that the figures represent revenue, not profit, and rejecting claims of unfair cost transfer.
Despite official explanations, fan groups and football associations across Europe and the US have labelled the pricing “unacceptable,” warning that travel costs could discourage attendance at one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
