Australia has shut down three websites involved in creating sexually exploitative AI-generated nude images of children. According to Al Jazeera, the country’s e-Safety Commissioner has confirmed the action.
e-Safety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said the platforms suspended all services in Australia after receiving formal warnings.
According to data from the commissioner’s office, nearly 100,000 Australians were using these sites every month. These platforms were involved in generating sexually abusive AI-created nude images using photos of school students.
Julie Inman Grant said these “nudify” services allow real images of people to be transformed into nude photos using AI, which has had a severely negative impact on Australian schools. She added that the sites were promoting dangerous features such as “undress any girl,” “schoolgirl image generation,” and “sex mode” without implementing necessary safety measures.
In September, a UK-based company received a formal warning, stating that failure to prevent the creation of child sexual exploitation content could result in fines of up to 49.5 million Australian dollars.
Grant further mentioned that AI model-hosting platform Hugging Face has also taken steps to comply with Australian law. The platform updated its terms of service to ensure users do not misuse the platform and to reduce safety risks.
Australia has long enforced strict online safety measures for children. The country has already banned social media use for children under 16 and taken tough action against apps used for stalking or creating deepfakes.
