Massive Cyberattack on China’s Supercomputer Raises Fears of Military Data Leak

Hackers reportedly accessed sensitive defense research and extracted vast amounts of data in one of the largest alleged breaches in China’s history.

A major cybersecurity breach has reportedly targeted a government-operated supercomputer in China, with claims that a massive volume of sensitive data including military research has been stolen. According to a report by CNN, the leaked information may include classified defense documents, missile designs, and advanced research related to combat aircraft and war simulations.

Estimates suggest the scale of the breach could exceed 10 petabytes of data, marking it as one of the largest alleged data theft incidents involving critical infrastructure in the country. If verified, the breach would represent a significant compromise of highly sensitive technological and defense-related information.

The attack is believed to have occurred at the National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin, a key institution that supports thousands of organizations, including those involved in aerospace, defense, and advanced scientific research. The center plays a crucial role in powering high-level computational work across multiple sectors.

Cybersecurity experts who reviewed samples of the leaked data indicated that attackers may have exploited a weak VPN entry point to gain access. Once inside, they reportedly used automated botnet systems to gradually extract data in small portions over an extended period, avoiding detection for months.

Some of the stolen data allegedly surfaced online in early February through a Telegram channel operated by an account named “FlamingChina.” The shared samples reportedly contained materials linked to aerospace engineering, military technology, bioinformatics, and fusion simulations.

Experts analyzing the samples noted the presence of documents marked as “confidential” in Chinese, along with technical files and renderings related to weapons systems. Such information could be highly valuable to foreign governments or intelligence agencies if confirmed authentic.

While the claims have raised serious concerns, independent verification of the full extent and authenticity of the leaked data remains limited.
