OpenAI Launches GPT-5.2, Boosting Productivity with Enhanced Features
The Chronify
The new GPT-5.2 model brings advancements in coding, long-context understanding, and multi-step project management, providing even more value to users.
OpenAI launched its latest artificial intelligence model, GPT-5.2, on Thursday, marking a significant upgrade in its AI offerings. The launch comes after CEO Sam Altman reportedly issued an internal "code red" in early December, pausing non-core projects to focus on accelerating the development of GPT-5.2 in response to the competition posed by Google's Gemini 3.
GPT-5.2 introduces notable improvements in general intelligence, coding capabilities, and the handling of long-context tasks. According to OpenAI, the new model will bring enhanced economic value for users, especially in tasks like creating spreadsheets, building presentations, and managing complex multi-step projects.
In November, Google launched its Gemini 3 model, which has since led several industry leaderboards. However, Altman expressed that Gemini 3's impact on OpenAI's metrics has been less significant than initially feared, citing the resilience of their models.
OpenAI, which is backed by Microsoft, also confirmed that it has no immediate plans to discontinue previous versions, including GPT-5.1, GPT-5, and GPT-4.1, from its API. Additionally, Disney announced a $1 billion investment in OpenAI, with plans to incorporate characters from its Star Wars, Pixar, and Marvel franchises into OpenAI's Sora AI video generator.
The GPT-5.2 model will be available in ChatGPT starting Thursday for users on paid plans, with three variants—Instant, Thinking, and Pro—being gradually rolled out.
