xAI's CFO exits the company after a brief three-month stint
The Chronify
Mike Liberatore, the chief financial officer of Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup xAI, has abruptly left the company after a mere three months on the job, a period that included a major fundraising round.
The departure was first reported by The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday. Liberatore, who was appointed as CFO in April, was instrumental in a substantial $5 billion debt raise for xAI in June. According to a Reuters report, he left the company around the end of July, though the reasons for his exit are currently unknown.
The leadership shuffle comes at a crucial time for xAI, which launched last year to challenge industry heavyweights like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. This isn't the only recent senior departure; xAI's legal head, Robert Keele, and co-founder Igor Babuschkin also left in August.
Musk has been an outspoken critic of other AI firms, and founded xAI with the goal of creating an alternative that he says is more focused on safety and open content policies. The company is currently focused on developing its Grok chatbot and expanding its data infrastructure.
