At least nine people, including a teacher and eight students, have been killed in a school shooting in southern Turkey, in a shocking incident that has intensified concerns over school safety in the country.
The attack took place on Wednesday at a secondary school in the Kahramanmaraş region. Turkish Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci confirmed the casualties, adding that at least 13 others were injured, with six reported to be in critical condition.
Authorities said the suspected attacker, a 14-year-old student, was also killed during the incident. According to initial reports, the attacker entered two classrooms and opened fire, causing panic among students and staff.
Officials revealed that the weapons used in the attack belonged to the suspect’s father, a former police officer. Local media reported that the father has been detained for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation.
This marks the second school shooting in the region within a week. On Tuesday, a former student opened fire at another high school in southern Turkey, injuring 16 people before taking his own life.
The motive behind the latest attack remains unclear, and authorities have launched a full-scale investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a statement posted on social media, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and wished a speedy recovery to the injured, calling for unity during this difficult time.
