Batting collapse costs Bangladesh despite strong position; inexperienced New Zealand side seals victory
Bangladesh began their ODI series with a disappointing 26-run loss to New Zealand, despite being in a commanding position for much of the run chase. The defeat marks the first setback under the leadership of Tamim Iqbal.
Batting first, New Zealand posted a competitive total of 247 for 8 in their allotted overs. Henry Nicholls led the scoring with 68 runs, while Dean Foxcroft contributed 59 in the middle order. Useful contributions from Will Young and Nathan Smith helped the visitors build a defendable total.
In reply, Bangladesh were bowled out for 221 with nine balls remaining. The chase started on a positive note, but regular wickets derailed their momentum. Saif Hasan scored 57, while Litton Das added 46, laying a solid foundation.
The turning point came in the final stages, when Bangladesh needed 67 runs from the last 10 overs with six wickets in hand. Set batters Towhid Hridoy and Afif Hossain were at the crease, but both failed to capitalise under pressure. Afif scored 27, while Hridoy’s fighting 55 went in vain.
New Zealand’s bowlers held their nerve, with Blair Tickner claiming four wickets and Nathan Smith picking up two crucial scalps.
The loss is particularly concerning for Bangladesh as they faced a relatively inexperienced New Zealand side, missing several regular players. It also raises questions about Bangladesh’s consistency ahead of crucial qualification scenarios for upcoming global tournaments.
