Italy has shown strong interest in hiring more Bangladeshi workers through legal channels, Home Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury announced on Monday.
Speaking to reporters after meeting his Italian counterpart Matteo Piantedosi in Dhaka, Jahangir said the Italian government values the hard work of Bangladeshi laborers and prefers to recruit them legally rather than see them take dangerous sea routes through third countries.
“We emphasized the importance of regular migration and also requested that those already in Italy through irregular channels be given legal status,” Jahangir added.
The meeting also covered plans to strengthen cooperation between law enforcement bodies, including the police, coast guard, and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
On a separate note, Jahangir addressed the recent attack on NCP leader Hasnat Abdullah, confirming that 54 individuals have already been detained. “No one involved will be spared,” he assured.
