Awami League Faces Election Disqualification After Upcoming Ban

The Awami League (AL) is poised to lose its registration with the Election Commission (EC) following an expected government ban under anti-terrorism laws. Once the official gazette is published, the EC will act in accordance with the Representation of the People Order, which disqualifies banned parties from participating in national elections or seeking re-registration.

The interim government made the decision during an emergency meeting, citing national security concerns and ongoing investigations at the International Crimes Tribunal. The ICT Act was amended to allow political parties to be held accountable for crimes against humanity.

CEC AMM Nasir Uddin said the EC will review the gazette before making a final decision, emphasizing that actions will align with the country’s current political climate. The move follows mass protests and the political downfall of former PM Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India after being ousted by a student-led uprising.

The AL, long regarded as a dominant political force, now faces an uncertain future as it stands on the brink of formal dissolution and exclusion from Bangladesh’s electoral process.
